Spaced teeth

Spaced teeth also known as diastemas or gapped teeth, are spaces between teeth that can occur anywhere in the mouth. They are most common between the upper front teeth. Gaps can sometimes indicate dental issues. If left untreated, can lead to oral health issues, misalignment, and oral functioning problems.

Here are some reasons the gaps may occur:

  • Natural development: Baby teeth often have gaps to make room for adult teeth. Gaps in adult teeth may close as more adult teeth come in.

  • Missing teeth: Some children are born missing teeth, or teeth may be stuck in the jawbone and not come through.

  • Extra teeth: Extra teeth can prevent other teeth from coming through.

  • Small teeth: Small teeth can create gaps.

  • Large jaws: Large jaws relative to the size of the teeth can create gaps.

  • Low-sitting frenulum: A fold of skin inside the upper lip that attaches to the gum can sit lower than normal and keep teeth apart.

  • Tongue thrust: When swallowing, some people push their tongue against their front teeth instead of the roof of their mouth. Over time, this pressure can move the teeth forward and create a gap.

  • Teeth grinding or jaw clenching: These habits can cause gaps.

  • Gum disease: Gaps can be a symptom of gum disease.

In some cultures gaps can be appealing, but they are considered a cosmetic issue by many patients
