Dental Sealants

5 minutes per tooth

Dental sealants are thin composite coatings that protect the chewing surfaces of teeth from cavities. They are applied to the back teeth, or molars, to fill in the pits and grooves that can trap food and germs. Sealants are painless and can be applied to both baby and adult teeth. Sealants only last about five years and need to be replaced periodically. Sealants should be applied as soon as the adult molars come in, which is around age 6 for the first molars and age 12 for the second molars.

Here are some benefits of dental sealants:

  • Economical

Sealants are an economical preventive measure to keep teeth healthy for years.

  • Prevent cavities

Sealants can prevent up to 80% of cavities for two years and continue to protect against 50% of cavities for up to four years.

  • Reduce need for fillings

Sealants can reduce the need for fillings and other more expensive treatments.
